Hey friends! As a Baptist campus ministry, we get lots of excellent questions about what exactly we believe. I wanted to tackle the 10 most frequent ones in hopes of clearing up any confusion. Feel free to ask any follow-ups!
1. Do Baptists baptize babies?
Nope! We practice exclusive believer’s baptism by full immersion. This signifies a public profession of personal faith in Jesus once someone is old enough to make that choice for themselves.
2. Can I take communion if I haven’t been baptized?
Yes! We welcome anyone trusting Jesus for salvation to participate in communion, baptized or not. No need to be a member or Baptist necessarily.
3. Why do Baptists focus so much on Bible study?
We believe Scripture alone has supreme authority for faith and practice. So baptizing believers and grounding faith in studying the Bible closely tie back to Jesus’ final instructions to disciples.
4. Isn’t immersion baptism pretty exclusive?
We don’t view this as exclusion but rather aligning with the biblical model. However, we recognize many godly Christians love Jesus deeply while belonging to paedobaptist traditions instead.
5. Do I need to speak in tongues or have dramatic conversion experiences to be truly saved?
No, the Holy Spirit grants spiritual gifts as He determines. While emotional conversion stories happen, gradual awakening to grace is equally legitimate.
6. Why do Baptists have deacons and pastors but not priests or bishops?
We believe in the “priesthood of all believers” so all Christians have equal access to God without hierarchies. Terms like pastor and deacon simply refer to spiritual leaders within a local church.
7. Is it true Baptists don’t drink or dance?
There’s a wide spectrum here! Historically some Baptist churches banned alcohol and dancing while others didn’t. Most modern Baptist churches allow responsible drinking and dance.
8. Do I have to vote Republican or affirm American patriotism to be Baptist?
Another common caricature but nope! Socio-political stances cannot determine salvation. Baptists span the political spectrum even if vocal segments prominently align Republican.
9. Why so serious and somber in worship? I want joy and celebration!
Great point! Baptist worship styles vary widely too from quite liturgical to very exuberant. But you’re right – wherever we land, praise overflowing from grateful hearts pleases God most.
10. Isn’t Christian unity important? Why so many Baptist denominations?
Very valid concern! We hope divisions based on race, theology, region, or worship preference eventually dissolve into one unified body of Christ. In the meantime, cooperation and joint efforts exist across Baptist groups.
